Ice on Whyte

Too cold for outdoor fun this weekend?  We don’t think so!  The Ice on Whyte Ice Carving Festival in Old Strathcona is full of activity and will be until January 23.   Last night was the launch of Because Edmonton Cares; a volunteer group created by our very good friend Jody who will work with local charitable organizations to arrange monthly volunteer projects for us.  Our first event was serving hot chocolate and coffee in the YESS tent to Ice on Whyte guests in exchange for a donation to the Youth Emergency Shelter Society.  Congratulations Jody!  Last night was a huge success and we’re anxiously awaiting our next assignment.

L and I spent most of yesterday desperately trying to make our toques and leg warmers look fashionable and trying to come up with an excuse that Jody would believe to get us out of serving coffee outside, late at night, in a windchill of -37.  We were impressed to see how many hearty Edmontonians were at the festival and how elaborate the ice sculptures are.  This years festival has a Chinese theme and ice sculpting teams from China, the Netherlands, Russia, Alaska, Armenia and Canada have created some amazing pieces of ice art.

We were most impressed to discover that the YESS Cafe tent was HEATED and featured entertainment by U22 Productions.  U22 is a collection of Canada’s most promising musicians under the age of 22.  Edmonton’s own, 14 year old, Kayla Patrick stole the show with a couple of amazing Michelle Branch / Taylor Swift-ish country sets. Watch out for Kayla!  We’ll be seeing big things in her future.

The highlight of the festival is the ice slide.  It took L a couple of hours to convince me to try it, but I finally gathered my courage and we did it!   After maneuvering the sharp turn at the bottom of the run, I’m pretty sure we’re ready for a spot on the Olympic luge team.

Keep warm everyone!  Tomorrow L and I are taking a huge step towards our New Years Resolution of eating healthy.  Stay tuned…
