Poker Face

  • If you’re playing a poker game and look around the table and can’t tell who the sucker is, it’s you.” – Paul Newman

Recently I was invited to play in a charity fun-money poker tournament.  For the past week, I have devoted the majority of my waking hours to learning this tricky game.  Thankfully my high-rolling, casino-expert, Vegas-loving friend was home from work for a few days and took pity on me and attempted to teach me.  He will agree that he was working from ground zero and I’m sure found the remedial poker lessons extremely frustrating.  At one point he stopped the game to work on my poker face.  He said the excitement in my eyes over a pair of 7’s makes me a very easy opponent.   His final advice to me was “you can play with your friends, but you have no business going to a casino”.

I know I have a lot to learn, but I’m hooked.  I finally understand why most guys have regular poker groups and why the World Poker Tour is so popular.  I’m looking forward to a rematch the next time he is in town, but want to be more prepared for our next game.  I came across a local company called Poker Chicks 101 and according to their website, they are exactly what I’m looking for.  President, Susan Taylor worked in the local casino industry and noticed that there were few women at the poker tables.  She discovered thay many women felt intimidated and didn’t have the skills or confidence to play competitively.  Poker Chicks teaches poker to groups of girls in a non-threatening and fun environment.  You can book a home party for at least 10 girls for only $35 per person.  Poker Chicks provides everything; including the poker table, instructor/dealer.  Great idea for a stagette or my brithday party later this month (hint L!!).

L & I will soon be checking out the River Cree Casino.  We’re far from ready for the poker room, but I’m feeling lucky about the slot machines.

Sounds like an awesome night! If you ladies ever want to do this I’d be interested in learning poker!

Great website and love what you girls are doing. This is my last year of the 40’s and I’ll be hitting the 50’s. Thanks for your nice comments about my company Poker Chicks. I look forward to meeting you both.

    See you at the table!
