Do the White Thing

IN 2009, IN JUST ONE DAY, ALBERTA SHELTERS HELPED 816 WOMEN AND 771 CHILDREN.

For the month of June, the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters and City Centre Mall are coming together with media throughout the city to raise the profile of the White Out Domestic Violence campaign.

The month-long event will feature local media and a schedule of events including White Space, Doing the White Thing, White of Way, and White Night, all of which aim to raise awareness and help victims access services and resources.  They are joined by Mayor Mandel and team members from the Edmonton Oilers and Eskimos.

Overview of Events

White Space: talk to health and beauty experts, drop off gently used clothing that will be donated to women’s shelters across the city, and learns about the signs of domestic violence (Month of June)

White of Way: Take part in a giant human chain through Edmonton’s Pedways (Noon, June 13, bridge over 101St.)

White Night: Enjoy a cocktail party and fashion show that incorporate white ribbons into the designs, all while donating to the cause (mall’s retail bridge at 8 p.m. on June 23)

Last year, there were eight domestic homicides in Edmonton. There are approximately 12,000 women and children accessing services at the 43 shelters in the province. (Jan Reimer, ACWS)
