Red vs. White

Excitement is building in Alberta as Edmonton and Calgary prepare to host the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships December 26 to January 5.  Canada plays all of its preliminary-round games in Edmonton and the hottest ticket in YEG for New Years Eve will be the Canada vs. USA game at Rexall Place.

I will be volunteering throughout the tournament with the media relations team and am heading to Rexall Place tonight to help out with the Red & White game.  Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Check Summer Development Camp is taking place this week with Canada’s 47 best players under the age of 20 hoping to impress Team Canada coaches and scouts for a spot on the 2012 Canadian World Junior Hockey team.  Tonight’s intra-squard game is a highlight of the camp for Edmonton fans before players head to Fort McMurray for a second Red & White game tomorrow.

Tonight’s Red & White game starts at 7:00 pm at Rexall place.  General admission tickets are available at Ticketmaster for $12.  Check out the tonight’s roster here.  Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be wearing white tonight.  Its a great opportunity for Oilers fans to catch a sneak peak at our newest #1 draft pick.

Check the ETS website if you’re planning to take the LRT as the Coliseum station is closed for the weekend.

Here are some other interesting activities happening throughout the camp:

Used Equipment Drive:

Hockey Canada, the World Junior Hocky Championships and The Brick Sports Central will execute a used hockey drive outside of Rexall Place.  Fans and volunteers are encouraged to donate their used sports equipment to the cause before entering Rexall Place.  All useable items collected will be refurbished and distributed to kids in need throughout various communities.

Honorary Captain

630 CHED will be awarding 2 kids the chance to be the Honorary Captain!  Contest winners will get a Team Canada jersey, skate out on the ice with Team Red and Team White and stand on the blue line for the national anthem.

Junior Journal Insider

The Edmonton Journal will be awarding 2 kids the chance to join the Edmonton Journal Cult of Hockey writer, Bruce McCurdy at tonight’s Red & White game.  The winners will receive a Team Canada jersey, watch the warm-up from the bench, sit on the catwalk with the media and join Bruce McCurdy in the Post Media scrum following the game.  Check out his blog post here for his take on the first few days of the camp; in particular the play of Oilers draft picks Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Dillon Simpson and Tyler Bunz.
